Manchester City end Liverpool’s unbeaten streak
The Citizens have ended Liverpool’s run of unbeaten 20 league games after a 2-1 victory in the game that took place at Etihad Stadium in the 21st round of the English Premier League.
The first 15 minutes were so fierce and tight as both teams struggle to create many chances with play being limited in the midfield. The 17th minute witnessed the biggest chance of the first half for the Reds when Salah linked perfectly with Roberto Firmino before sending Mane through but the Senegalese’s shot hit the left post. A scramble inside City’s box followed when John Stones failed to clear the ball well, however the Englishman made a perfect effort to clear the ball just over a centimeter off the line.
Manchester City dominated the half in terms of possession but the failed to break through for the majority of the first half. David Silva had the opportunity to find the opener when he met Raheem Sterling’s low drive inside the 6-yard box but his final touch was blocked by Virgil Van Dijk.
However in the 40th minute, Aguero managed to break the deadlock after controlling Bernando Silva’s low cross at the near post on Alisson’s right post before sending a fierce shot from narrow angle into the top of the net.
Liverpool improved over the course of the second half, Alexander Arnold was close to get an equalizer when he sent a strike near the edge of the penalty box after 10 minutes but it went wide.
In the 62nd minute, Roberto Firimino tried to exploit on lack of communication between Vincent Kompany and Ederson, yet the Belgian did very well to deny the Brazilian off the line. However two minutes later, Firmino managed to bring things back for Liverpool when Andy Robertson received a long ball from Trent to the Brazilian who headed the ball into the empty net.
City needed just seven minutes to retake their lead through Leroy Sane who received the ball from a Sterling before smashing a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Liverpool tried everything to get an equalizer, as they pressed City in their own half and took complete control of the game. In the 81st minute, Aguero had the chance to completely kill the game after a counterattack started by Raheem Sterling but the Argentinian failed to beat Alisson who did very well to keep the difference at one goal.
In the 83rd minute, Salah created space for himself inside the box to receive be a ball form Fabinho but his effort was denied by Ederson, before the final whistle gave City the three points.
City kept their second place as they managed to close the gap on Liverpool to four points after the 21st round of the English Premier league.
