CAF award winners in full: Renard, Hakimi, Kgatlana scoop awards


Morocco manager has won the CAF Coach of the Year award for the third time, while  were named as the Men’s Team of the Year.

A ceremony was held at an awards gala on Tuesday, January 8 in Dakar, Senegal, which saw a number of awards presented to Africa’s most successful sportsmen and women in 2018.

French head coach Hervé Renard claimed the CAF Coach of the Year award for 2018 after Morocco’s impressive performances in the World Cup and the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.

This marks the third time Renard has won the trophy after 2012 and 2015, when he was managing Zambia and Ivory Coast respectively.

On the other hand, South Africa’s Desiree Ellis clinched the Women’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Banyana Banyana for their first-ever World Cup and the 2018 AFCON final, which they lost to .

The 2018 African Youth Player of the Year award went to Morocco international and Borussia Dortmund defender .

The 20-year-old is currently on a two-year loan at BVB from Real Madrid, the team which he helped lift the UEFA Champions League title, featuring twice in their road to the title.

Hakimi also played Morocco’s three World Cup games against Iran, Portugal, and Spain.

In the team awards, Mauritania were named as the Men’s Team of the Year after they managed to reach their first-ever AFCON, while Nigeria claimed Women’s Team of the Year award after winning the 2018 AFCON.

Minutes before Mohamed Salah was announced as the CAF Player of the Year, South African forward was crowned as the African Women’s Player of the Year.

Kgatlana, who plays for American side Houston Dash, was the 2018 Women’s AFCON top scorer with five goals and also managed to win the player of the tournament award.

The ceremony was concluded by Mohamed Salah being named as the CAF Player of the Year for the second time in a row, beating Sadio Mane and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
