Egypt national team goalkeepers coach revealed that former coach Hector Cuper did not want to start with veteran goalie in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Ahmed El-Shennawy was the staff’s first choice during the championship, however, he was injured in Egypt’s first game and was replaced by the legendary goalie, who then led the Pharaohs to the final game against Cameroon.

“For one week Cuper tried to convince me not to start with El-Hadary in the African championship. He didn’t want to have a 44-year-old goalkeeper in this tournament,” Nagy said in radio comments.

“Cuper would ask me every day ‘Are you sure about his skills at this age?’ and I would assure him that he is ready.

“Cuper recently said that including El-Hadary was not his choice, he even thought I was crazy for taking this decision,” he added.
