HANDBALL: Egypt lose 2019 World Cup opener to Sweden
The Pharaohs participated in their 14th straight World Championships after finishing in second place at the 2018 African Championship, losing the title to Tunisia.
The competition is co-hosted by Germany and Denmark with Egypt’s group stationed in Copenhagen, Denmark
Egypt were drawn into Group D with Sweden, Hungary, Qatar, Argentina, and Angola, with the top three teams advance to the next round.
Despite a brilliant performance on Friday, they lost their opening game 27-24 against four-time world champions Sweden.
The first-half ended 13-11 to Sweden, and a 14-13 second-half score meant that the European side have clinched the win and the top spot of the group.
Egypt’s next game will be against Qatar, who also lost their first game to Angola, on Sunday before facing Argentina, Hungary, and Angola.
The Pharaohs’ highest finish ever at the World Championships came in 2001 when they finished in fourth place.
