Martin Lasarte on starting Salif Coulibaly, leaving Yasser Ibrahim out
The Red Devils secured a valuable 2-0 home win against AS Vita Club in the first round of the CAF Champions League group-stages, thanks to goals from Nasser Maher and Ali Maaloul.
Despite him becoming so close to leaving the club, Salif Coulibaly was given the nod to start instead of new signing Yasser Ibrahim, while new club-record signing Hussein El-Shahat made his debut.
“Salif Coulibaly played today because he was the best against Smouha, and he played really well against AS Vita club as well,” Lasarte said.
“Coulibaly was with us today and that’s why he played. We were thinking only about the AS Vita Club game, and entered the game looking for the win.
“Yasser Ibrahim didn’t participate because has only joined the club two days ago, meanwhile, Hussein El-Shahat has a lot of experience and has featured recently in the Club World Cup, that’s why he was fit for the game.
“We did not have many options because of the large number of injuries. We don’t have much time and now we will think about the upcoming game,” he added.
The victory put Al Ahly second in group D, behind leaders Simba SC on goal difference. Their next game will be against Algeria’s JS Saoura away from home next Friday.
