Egypt earn first World Championship victory over Argentina
The Egyptian national team have maintained their chances in qualifying for the second round of the World Men’s Handball Championship in Denmark and Germany after defeating Argentina.
Egypt were drawn into Group D with Sweden, Hungary, Qatar, Argentina, and Angola, with the top three teams advance to the next round.
The Pharaohs lost their opening game of the championship 27-24 against four-time world champions Sweden, and it was followed by a successive second defeat to Qatar 28-23 on Sunday.
David Davis’ men were finally able to turn their fortunes around against Argentina in a decisive encounter to hold tight on their qualification hopes.
Egypt had the upper hand early on into the game, before Argentina got back into the tie and take the lead after the 12th minute. The competition in the first half remained fierce between the two teams but Argentina managed to end the first 30 minutes with one-goal lead.
In the second half, Egypt succeeded in turning the result around and proceeded in the game, managing to maintain their lead in the final five minutes of the game to come out with 22-20 victory.
The Pharaohs will face Hungary and Angola on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
