HANDBALL: Egypt beat Angola, secure main round place
The Pharaohs were drawn into Group D with Sweden, Hungary, Qatar, Argentina, and Angola, with the top three teams advance to the next round.
This meant that they have to beat Angola in order to secure a place in the main round alongside Sweden and Hungary, who finished top of the group.
Egypt didn’t face any difficulties against bottom-placed Angola as they dominated the first-half completely, scoring 19 goals, while conceding 12.
The second-half started at a slow pace, and the Pharaohs managed to maintain their seven-goal lead until the final moments of the game, before Angola upped their game, but still lost the game 33-28.
Following the win, Egypt have secured the third place of group D, meaning that they will be placed in group II alongside hosts Denmark, Norway, and the winner of Tunisia vs Austria encounter, as well as Sweden and Hungary.
The top two teams of the group will qualify for the semi-finals, while the third place will play for the fifth placed playoffs, with fourth playing for the seventh-placed playoffs.
This means that Egypt have now guaranteed themselves a place in the top 12 teams, a ranking they had not achieved since 2001, when they finished fourth.
