Dennis Oliech reveals reason behind celebration against Zamalek
Kenyan legend Dennis Oliech has revealed the reason behind his match-winning celebration against Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Gor Mahia stunned Zamalek with a 4-2 victory in the game which saw Dennis Oliech score the winner on his CAF Confederation Cup debut.
Oliech, who played for French sides Auxerre and Nantes, signed for Gor Mahia in January, after a four-year break away from football, and has marked his return with a historic goal.
The goal came exactly 21 years after Oliech’s brother Steve Okumu scored against Zamalek, when he helped the K’Ogalo win 1-0 in Nairobi in 1998, and Oliech celebrated in the exact same way his late brother did.
“I dedicate this goal to my late brother. I knew I would come on and score and I wanted to celebrate in the exact same way he did,” Oliech said after the game.
“I am happy that we won. It is not about me but my team and I am pleased with the result. This is behind us now and we focus on the next game,” he added.
Gor Magia Head coach Hassan Oktay has revealed his delight after guiding his side to the victory, saying he expected the win before the game.
“I was expecting this win because we did some good homework on Zamalek and watched their game against Pyramids (in the Egyptian league) and two other teams,” Oktay said.
“We knew the way they play and tactically we were ready for them. I knew we could get something and I am happy with the players,” he added.
