Al Ahly suffer first CAF Champions League defeat to Simba
Al Ahly have suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Tanzanian side Simba SC in the fourth round of the CAF Champions League group-stages.
The Reds entered the game sitting top of the group with seven points, while Simba came in third with three points.
The hosts dominated the early minutes of the first-half and 13 minutes after the start, Meddie Kagere could have opened the scoring for them, but was denied by El-Shennawy.
Al Ahly’s first chance of the game came in the 23rd minute through Hussein El-Shahat, who shot from inside the box went inches wide of the post.
The Reds had then a couple of chances through Ali Maaloul, Karim Nedved, and Ramadan Sobhi, but failed to deliver the end product.
In the 41st minute, Meddie Kagere had another clear-cut chance, but again Mohamed El-Shennawy brilliantly stopped him from scoring.
Three minutes after the restart, Hussein El-Shahat had a golden opportunity to put Al Ahly into the lead, when Ajayi put him through on goal, but his shot was saved easily by the keeper.
Mohamed El-Shennawy produced a moment of magic, when saved John Bocco’s one-on-one chance to keep Al Ahly in the game.
However, in the 65th minute, Meddie Kagere managed to break the deadlock when he received John Bocco’s heading pass and put the ball into the net.
The Reds tried to score the equaliser, with Lasarte bringing in the likes of Nasser Maher and Salah Mohsen, but the Egyptians failed to create any dangerous chances.
