Toulan blames Toni Silva’s missed chance for Al Hilal heavy defeat
Ittihad of Alexandria manager Helmy Toulan believes that if Toni Silva had scored the chance he got against Al Hilal, the scoreline would have been different.
The Alexandria-based club suffered a heavy 3-0 away defeat to Saudi side Al Hilal in the first-leg of the Arab Championship quarter-finals.
Carlos Eduardo opened the scoring for Al Hilal after 14 minutes, before Bafétimbi Gomis scored a brace to help the Saudi giants put one foot in the semi-finals.
However, a few minutes after Eduardo’s opener, former Liverpool youngster Toni Silva had a huge chance to equalise for Ittihad, when Manga put him through on goal, but the Bissau-Guinean international couldn’t beat Abdullah Al-Mayouf.
Toulan believes that this chance had a huge impact on the game and had Silva scored it, the scoreline would have been different.
“If Toni Silva had scored his one-on-one chance, the game would have completely changed,” Toulan said in his post-match press conference.
“When you face a big team like Al Hilal, you have to score every chance you get or you will regret it.
“I spoke before the game and said that Al Hilal have a very special type of players, everyone knows Al Hilal’s worth,” he added.
Ittihad have an almost impossible mission when they host the Saudi side in Alexandria on February 25, as they need to win by a four-goal margin to reach the semis.
They are the only remaining Egyptian club in the competition following the elimination of Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek in the round of 16.
