VIDEO: Samir returns to haunt Zamalek as Whites let two-goal lead slip
Ahmed Samir came back to haunt his old club by scoring a brace as Zamalek let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 in the 23rd round of the Egyptian Premier League.
Zamalek looked so comfortable in the first 30 minutes of the game as they managed to force their complete domination against El-Gaish over the course of the first half-hour.
The leaders’ first chance of the game came after just five minutes through Youssef Obama, who received Kahraba’s pass before firing over the bar.
Kaharba tried his effort six minutes later, but his long-range effort was easily saved by El-Gaish’s goalkeeper Mohamed Bassam.
Zamalek’s domination finally paid off when they managed to take the lead in the 25th minute through Obama, who finished Nagguez’s low cross with a first touch into Bassam’s net.
Five minutes later, the league leaders were able to double their lead through Khaled Boutaib following a link up play between Ibrahim Hassan and Kahraba, before the latter’s low cross was easily tapped in by the Moroccan.
However, in the 32nd and against the run of play, Ahmed Samir scored a brilliant goal to pull one back for Tala’a El-Gaish. A cross was played into Zamalek’s penalty box, which was cleared before reaching Samir, who sent an unstoppable half volley into the top corner.
Three minutes later, Zamalek were on verge of regaining the two-goal lead from a corner as Mohamed Abdel-Ghany tried to exploit on a scramble in El-Gaish’s area, but his shot was cleared off the line.
El-Gaish looked much better in the second-half thanks to Luc Eymael’s changes as he brought in Frank Engonga and Chikatara for Islam Gamal and Ahmed Gafaar respectively.
In the 71st minute, Ahmed Samir was a threat once again as he launched a solo run in Zamalek’s half, before sending a long-range effort, but it went inches wide of the post.
Four minutes away from the final whsitle, Ahmed Samir rewarded El-Gaish’s efforts with a late equalizer as he controlled the ball near the edge of the penalty area, before sending a curling effort in the top right corner.
In the third minute of additional time, Obama missed a huge opportunity to bring back Zamalek in front as he went one-on-one with Bassam, but his shot hit the side-netting.
Following the draw, Zamalek maintain their place at the top of the league with 52 points, while El-Gaish sit 10th with 26 points.
