Mohamed Awad ruled out of March internationals due to injury
Saudi Arabia’s Al Wehda goalkeeper Mohamed Awad has been ruled out of the March internationals after sustaining a calf injury.
Egypt will play two games in March, they will start with an AFCON qualifier against Niger away from home, before travelling to Nigeria to face them in a friendly four days later.
It has been confirmed that the Pharaohs will be without Mohamed Awad who limped out with a calf injury during Al Wehda’s big 4-1 victory over Ohod on Friday.
Egypt’s goalkeeping coach Ahmed Nagy has revealed that Awad will be out for three weeks, meaning that he will not be available for any of the March internationals.
“The scans have confirmed that Awad has torn his calf muscle and will be out of action for two to three weeks,” Nagy said on Monday.
“Awad will not be with us in the upcoming camp, but hopefully he will be part of the team that takes part in the 2019 AFCON.
“Of course, Awad is upset, but that’s normal in football,” he added.
Awad, who is currently on loan at Saudi side Al Wehda from Ismaily, has impressed in Saudi Arabia, starting every game since his arrival, keeping six clean sheets in 23 games.
The 26-year-old has been a regular in Javier Aguirre’s squads, however, he has only one international cap to his name, which came in a friendly against Greece last March.
El-Shennawy is the only one of these three who has international experience, featuring 29 times for the Pharaohs, with his last game coming in January 2017 in the AFCON opener.
On the other hand, Amer Amer has been exceptional for Entag this season, and has been linked with a summer move to Cairo giants Al Ahly.
According to EFA vice president Ahmed Shobier, Awad will not be the only player to miss the March internationals, as Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Hegazi will be left out of the squad as Aguirre wants to give fresh faces a chance ahead of the 2019 AFCON.
“Mohamed Salah will not play the Niger game in the AFCON qualifiers or the Nigeria friendly,” the EFA vice president said.
“Ahmed Hegazi will probably also be left out of the squad,” he added.
