Peru manager denies calling-up Benavente, discusses his move to Egypt
It was previously announced that Benavente was called-up for the Incas’ March camp where they’re set to face Paraguay and El Salvador. However manager Ricardo Gareca denied calling the youngster up.
Bnavente joined Egyptian side Pyramids FC from Belgium’s RSC Charleroi in January. The 24-year-old is a Real Madrid academy graduate but was never able to make it to the first team.
Then in 2015 he moved on a free transfer for English League Two side MK Dons. He he spent just one month in England before moving to Belgium.
Peru national team manager Ricardo Gareca talked about the youngster’s move to Egypt and why he didn’t call him up.
“Concerning Benavente it’s a decision that we made because we want to see other players in the Peruvian national team,” Gareca said
“What I saw in Egypt, in terms of football, is very different from what I saw in Belgium.
The Copa America is set to take place in Brazil between June 14 and July 7. Peru were drawn in Group A alongside the hosts, Bolivia and Venezuela.
“Sure he’s not with us now, but he might receive a call-up 15 days before the tournament. We’ll give him enough time to rest and if everything goes well we might see him in the Copa America.”
This season Benavente played five games in the Egyptian Premier League, scoring once and providing one assist.
