Mane brace, Van Dijk header lead Liverpool to Champions League quarterfinal

Liverpool have sealed qualification to the quarterfinal after managing to down Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena with a 3-1 victory. 

Liverpool were held in the first leg clash at Anfield to a 0-0 draw in a dull game from and his teammates who couldn’t turn their chances into goals.

The Reds’ entered the encounter with little changes to their lineup from the first leg with the return of Virgil Van Dijk and James Milner who had missed the first game due to suspension and injury respectively.

Bayern were unsurprisingly the dominant side at the beginning of the game with attempts to besiege Liverpool in their half and take the lead. Klopp received bad news at the 13th minute when captain Jordan Henderson sustained an injury in his left foot and was forced off with Fabinho replacing him.

In the 26th minute Van Dijk sent a precise long pass to Sadio Mane in front of goal, Manuel Neuer came out of his goal but the Senegalese turned him inside out with a stupendous skill and scored in the open net to give Liverpool the lead.

13 minutes later the Bavarians succeeded in making things level after a long ball was sent behind Robertson for Serge Gnabry to fire a cross-shot that was converted by Joel Matip into his own net.

In the second half, Liverpool appeared to be the much better side with more confidence and holding the ball possession. The Reds retook the lead when Van Dijk leaped over Mats Hummels and sent a composed header into the bottom corner off James Milner assist from the corner in the 69th minute.

The 2018 Champions League finalists put the tie definitely to bed in the 84th minute when Salah received a pass on the right side from Origi before playing a delightful outside-of-the-boot cross to Mane who headed in Liverpool’s third from inside the box
