Martin Lasarte discusses El-Shennawy’s availability for JS Saoura clash
Al Ahly had fallen to a late 1-0 defeat to DR Congo’s AS Vita Club in the previous round to delay their qualification for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The Red Devils are required to defeat JS Saoura in order to ensure they are through to the quarterfinals of the African competition regardless of the result of the other encounter between Simba SC of Tanzania and Congo’s AS Vita.
However the Cairo giants suffered a huge blow as both goalkeepers Mohamed El-Shennawy sustained injuries, meaning that third choice goalkeeper Ali Lotfi will replace them.
Nonetheless Lasarte still believes that El-Shennawy could still be available for their game.
“We will wait until the very last moments to see if El-Shennawy is fit.” Lasarte said.
“El-Shennawy is a great goalkeeper with a lot of experience. We still have 24 hours before the JS Saoura game, the player’s condition improved over the past couple of days.
“If he’s still not ready we completely trust in Ali Lotfi’s abilities. He’s been putting a lot of effort lately and performed brilliantly against Vita Club.
“The JS Saoura game is going to be very difficult. But we’re ready to win the game and continue our journey in the tournament.
“We’re playing this game in very tough conditions. We hoped to play this after securing qualification but the conditions didn’t help and we’re ready.
“I have a lot of trust in our players and their experience to win games.”
