Al Ahly boss Martin Lasarte relieved after JS Saoura victory
Al Ahly boss Martin Lasarte has expressed his delight following the team’s qualification for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
The Reds secured their place in the quarter-finals following a big 3-0 victory over Algeria’s JS Saoura at Borg El-Arab on Saturday.
Al Ahly entered the game sitting in second place with seven points, one behind leaders JS Saoura, while AS Vita Club and Simba came third and fourth with seven and six points.
They needed to beat the Algerians by any scoreline to top their group and secure their place in the knockout rounds, while a draw would have been enough for the visitors to advance.
Fateh Talah gave Al Ahly a 30th-minute lead after converting Ali Maaloul’s cross into his own net, before Marwan Mohsen and Hussein El-Shahat secured the win.
“We took advantage of the opposition’s mistakes and that helped us create a lot of chances,” Martín Lasarte said in his post-match press conference.
“We will take a rest during the international break and then will continue our Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
“There are a number of players who lack the African competitions experience like Mohamed Hany, Karim Nedved, Nasser Maher, and Ramadan Sobhi, but their experience will increase with the time.
“The players and staff were under a lot of pressure recently because of the team’s position in the group, but we have dealt with the situation well,” he added.
Following the victory, Al Ahly qualify as the group winners with 10 points, while Simba sit second with nine and are followed by JS Saoura and AS Vita Club who were knocked out with eight and seven points respectively.
