Ex-Ghana international Michael Essien joins Azerbaijan’s Sabail FK
The 36-year-old has been a free agent since March 2018 after ending his contract with Indonesian side Persib Bandung.
After a year without football action, Essien has agreed to join Sabail FK on a deal that runs until May 2020 and will take up a coaching role alongside the player one.
Essien will join the club’s U-19 coaching staff to acquire coaching experience as part of his quest for the UEFA B coaching badge.
“I was here three weeks ago. Had a good chat with the club and they told me about the project. I thought about it, liked it and here we are,” Essien said after signing.
“It’s a different thing to what I have seen before. Looks interesting and exciting, so happy to be here,” Essien told Sabail’s website.
Sabail will become the Ghanian’s ninth club after stints at Liberty Professionals Accra, SC Bastia, Olympique Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Panathinaikos, and most recently Persib Bandung.
During his long illustrious career, Essien managed to lift a number of major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2012, two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, as well as two domestic doubles with Lyon in 2004 and 2005.
He has 58 international caps to his name, representing Ghana in two World Cups and two AFCONS, but hasn’t been called-up since the 2014 World Cup.
