Jose Mourinho heaps praise for Abou-Trieka over AFCON exploits
Treika was one of Egypt’s stars who led the Pharaohs to their sixth AFCON title and the second successive one in Ghana in 2008, with brilliant performances from the Pharaohs throughout the whole tournament.
In an interview with BeIN sports, Mourinho has recalled his time attending some games in the African competition following some of Africa’s superstars playing there.
The 56-year old praised Abo-Treika for his performance that led Egypt for their title, claiming however it was very difficult for him to sign Al-Ahly’s legend at one of his European clubs.
“I went to watch some games of the tournament (2008 AFCON) live, and I have really watched a couple of tough and good games there,” Mourinho spoke to BeIN.
“I was watching some games through the TV while attending others. I watched Abou-Treika while leading the Egyptian National Team to win the title with his performances.
“However watching a player you have never known before, before producing such great performances makes it very difficult to sign him for your team.
“The tournament was so strong and it included many of Africa’s best players who stars at their clubs and performed very well for their national teams,” he added.
The former Chelsea coach has revealed before his desire to sign Aboutrika back during his first stint as the Blues manager, but opted against that due to the player’s age at the time.
