Al Ahly knocked out of Champions League despite victory
The Reds suffered a huge 5-0 defeat in South Africa, which meant that they needed to win by a six-goal margin in order to reach the semi-finals.
Al Ahly had a huge chance to score only 15 seconds into the game through Walid Azaro, but Denis Onyango denied him with a great save.
The hosts continued to dominate the game and had a number of chances to score, but failed to find the net, with Amr El-Sulya coming close to open the scoring in the 15th minute, when his shot hit the bar.
Ramadan Sobhi and Walid Azaro had another two chances to score, but Onyango was in a brilliant form and the first-half ended 0-0.
Three minutes after the restart, Junior Ajayi put the ball into Onyango’s net, but Bakary Gassama controversially ruled out the goal out for offside.
Al Ahly failed to convert three more chances through Ajayi and Walid Azaro, until the 66th minute when the latter opened the scoring for the Reds after an inch-perfect cross from Ahmed Fathi.
Marwan Mohsen, Nasser Maher, and Salah Mohsen were brought on for Hussein El-Shahat, Amr El-Sulya, and Junior Ajayi in the final 15 minute, but Al Ahly failed to score any more goals, which meant the end of Al Ahly’s Champions League campaign.
