Lasarte proud of Al Ahly performance despite defeat, will not resign
Martin Lasarte has revealed he will not resign from his post as Al Ahly manager following the team’s elimination from the CAF Champions League.
The Reds were knocked out of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals following a 5-1 aggregate defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
Walid Azarou’s 66th-minute strike was not enough to secure a place for the Cairo giants in the semi-finals, however, Lasarte revealed his delight with the team’s performance, saying the players did everything they could.
“We did everything we could to change the situation. On Friday, we watched the Barcelona vs PSG game in order to motivate the players,” Lasarte said in his post-match press conference.
“We wanted to score early, and we nearly did through Azaro and Amr El-Sulya. I am proud of Al Ahly players despite the result. That’s football.
“I am pleased with my player’s performances and will continue to work to improve the overall performance and win trophies with the Reds.
“I don’t think about resigning from my post. I have only joined Al Ahly three months ago. We had a lot of injuries and we were 12 points behind Zamalek.
“We are currently top of the league table and don’t have many injuries, but if the club wants me to leave I will respect their decision.
“But for me, I will never think about leaving after losing a game. I have a lot of goals that I want to achieve with Al Ahly,” he added.
Al Ahly will now shift their focus to the Egyptian Premier League as they currently sit top with nine games to go. They will host third-placed Pyramids FC on Thursday.
