Roma icon has spoken on his relationship with former teammate and his subsequent success after leaving for Liverpool.

There are few players in the history of football who embody the values of their club more than Francesco Totti and Roma. A true one club man, Totti snubbed offers from the likes of Real Madrid to stay with his boyhood club for his entire career until his retirement in 2017.

During the latter stage of his career, Totti was part of the supporting cast for a Roma attack that featured Mohamed Salah. In an interview with BeIN Sports, Totti has spoken on his relationship with the Egyptian.

The 42 year old said, “Sincerely I’m very sorry for every player that has left the team because when you stay with someone day after day you can understand what kind of person he is. So this happened with Salah and Alisson and other players who left Roma.”

“It’s normal in that moment you feel very sorry but with Momo I had a particular relationship. In fact every time he played and scored with me he always told me he felt like a different player because he had fun playing with me and he liked the way I put him in front of goal with my assists.”

He continued, “He is an exceptional person and a true man who gave a lot to the club but at the end unfortuantely in life you have to make decisions and we have to respect his. I think he made the right decision to go to Liverpool because they are one of the most important clubs in Europe. They’ve won many trophies, so a top player like him should play in a top club like Liverpool. We’re still in touch by message and I’m very happy to say that I met a great person and a great player.”

Salah was able to return to face his former club in the UEFA Champions League semi final last season, and he will hope to reach the same stage again this season in Liverpool’s next game in the quarter final second leg away at Porto.
