Zamalek to face Étoile du Sahel in CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals

Zamalek will face Tunisian giants Étoile Sportive du Sahel in the semi-finals after the latter beat Sudan’s Al Hilal 5-2 on aggregate.

The Whites qualified for the semis following their 1-0 aggregate victory over Morocco’s Hassania Agadir. They drew 0-0 in Morocco, before winning 1-0 at home, thanks to Ibrahim Hassan’s strike.

They will be up against Tunisia’s Étoile Sportive du Sahel, who managed to beat Sudan’s champions Al Hilal 3-1 at home, before winning again 2-1 away from home.

The return-leg was played in the Egyptian Army Stadium in Suez due to Sudan’s instability as they have been witnessing several protests over the past weeks demanding the overthrowing over the current regime.

Al Hilal needed to win by a two-goal margin in order to advance to the semi-finals and they got off to a flying start after Waleed Bakhet Hamid put them 1-0 up after 30 minutes.

However, six minutes later, Karim Aribi equalised for the Tunisians, and minutes laters Etoile were forced to sub off their goalkeeper Walid Kriden due to an injury and after the half-time whistle, Aribi was sent off after assaulting an Al Hilal player.

That didn’t stop Etoile from clinching the victory as an 80th-minute strike from Wajdi Kechrida secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

They will now face Egypt’s Zamalek, with the first-leg taking place at Borg El-Arab in Alexandria on April 28, before both teams face each other in Sousse a week later.

It’s worth mentioning that Étoile were crowned as Arab Club Championship champions last week following a late 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.

The other semi-final will be between Morocco’s RS Berkane and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia and the two legs will be played on the same days.
