Former and international midfielder has tragically passed away after collapsing while playing in eSwatini.

The 28 year old had received warning from doctors in January that he should consider retiring due to a suspected heart condition. He was also believed to be offered the chance to receive heart surgery, which had not been taken at the time.

His last tale of success was the greatest moment of his country’s footballing history in which Burundi qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-1 draw against Gabon, as Faty was an unused substitute looking forward to playing in the tournament proper.

Papy Faty’s story has ended in tragedy, however, after he collapsed on the pitch in eSwatini and subsequently died. We offer our condolences to his family and friends at this time.

Burundi will play on without Faty at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in a group with Nigeria, Guinea and Madagascar.
