and midfielder Cheikh N’Doye has had to receive knee surgery and is now unlikely to feature at AFCON for the Teranga Lions this summer.

The 33 year old picked up an injury in a friendly against local rivals Mali in March, and while it was initially believed to be a minor sprain it transpires that he requires surgery and as a result faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

N’Doye is a key part of Aliou Cisse’s plans, as shown by the fact that he played in two of Senegal’s games in the World Cup last summer. He also offers a more experienced presence in a squad full of youngsters.

Should N’Doye miss out, it is likely to create an opening for Assane Diousse to return to the squad, despite enduring a tough season on loan at Chievo Verona from St Etienne.

With or without the midfieler, Senegal will kick off their campaign on the 23rd of June against Tanzania before facing Algeria and Kenya in arguably the toughest group of the competition.
