Spain giants Barcelona have set a foot in their first Champions League final since 2015 after defeating ’s Liverpool in the first leg of the semifinal at Camp Nou.

Liverpool started the game on the right foot and were surprisingly exerting pressure on the hosts right from the beginning despite playing away from home. Though missing team striker Roberto Firmino seemed to affect them.

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reminded the visitors of his clinical finishing by opening the scoring in the 26th minute after sneaking between the Reds’ centre backs Van Dijk and Matip to slot Jordi Alba’s delightful cross past Alisson and give his side the lead.

The half then remained balanced between the two sides for it to end with Suarez’s goal the difference between them.

In the second half, Jurgen Klopp’s men were even more aggressive in an attempt to obtain a crucial away goal but they’re blocked by heroic saves from Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen who rescued his side from conceding in efforts from Milner and Salah.

And the moment where Messi stepped up arrived when he led a counter for his side before doubling their lead from a rebound with 15 minutes left.

In the 82nd minute, Messi scored a marvelous free-kick to make it 600 career goals for himself and put the tie to bed.

Following the third goal, the Egypt international almost grabbed a valuable away goal for Liverpool when he hit the post. The second leg encounter will take place on Tuesday at Anfield with Liverpool having a mountain to climb in order to see themselves through to the final.
