Zamalek to field third-choice goalkeeper Omar Salah in Confederation Cup final
The Whites have qualified for the CAF Conferedation Cup final, where they will face Morocco’s RS Berkane, following a 1-0 aggregate victory over Étoile du Sahel.
In the dying moments of the game, goalkeeper Mahmoud Gennesh received a second yellow card and was sent off, with the club’s forward Omar El-Said being forced to replace him between the sticks.
This meant that Gennesh will miss the first-leg of the final, with his replacement being Emad El-Sayed, whose last appearance for the Whites came in Zamalek’s 4-1 victory over Misr El-Makkasa last January.
This made Gross start him against El-Dakhleya on Sunday to increase his match sharpness, and the 33-year-old repaid the faith shown in him by saving a penalty and helping the Whites to a 2-1 victory.
However, in the final minutes of the game, El-Sayed suffered a hand injury, which will keep him out for at least four weeks, according to the club’s official website.
Gross will now have start 21-year-old Omar Salah in the final, with no replacements sitting on the bench as the club have only registered three goalkeepers for the competition.
Salah is a product of Zamalek’s youth sector, and has made only five appearances for the first team in the last three years, including three in the Egypt Cup.
He has never played a contentinal competition game and his only league start came in Zamalek’s 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Al Ahly in July 2017.
