Egypt’s Abou El-Regal to officiate U-20 World Cup opening game
Egyptian referee Mahmoud Ahmed Abou El-Regal is part of the all-African refereeing team set to officiate the FIFA U-20 World Cup opening match between Poland and Colombia.
The U-20 World Cup is set to take place in Poland between May 23 and June 15. The hosts were automatically put in Group A alongside Colombia, Tahiti and Senegal.
The tournament will witness the participation of four African teams in Senegal, Mali, South Africa and Nigeria. As well as two Arab nations in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
One day before the tournament’s kick-off, football’s international governing body (FIFA) announced that an African trio will be refereeing the opening game of the tournament between the hosts and Colombia on May 23.
The main referee will be Algeria’s Mustapha Ghorbal and he’ll be assisted by fellow compatriot Mokrane Gourari and Mahmoud Ahmed Abou El-Regal from Egypt.
Abou El-Regal officiated a number of CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup games, including Al-Hilal’s 4-1 thrashing of Zambia’s Nkana FC.
