Al Ahly, Ismaily share the spoils as the Reds drop points in title chase
Egyptian outfit Ismaily have managed to hold Cairo giants Al Ahly to a 1-1 stalemate in a postponed game from the 18th round of the Egyptian Premier League for the Red Devils to squander two important points in their league pursuit.
This draw means that Al Ahly has now become obliged their remaining two league games against Arab Contractors and arch-rivals Zamalek should the Whites prevail in their two games ahead of the derby in order to retain the league title.
Game went balanced between the two sides in the first 20 minutes with almost no noticeable chances despite the Red Devils relatively having the upper hand. Unexpectedly, Ismaily were close to taking the lead in the 21th minute after going clear against Mohamed El-Shennawy but the Al Ahly keeper get out of his goal to deny him.
In the first half’s injury time, Azarou got a goal ruled out after his provider Ali Maaloul was whistled for offside.
Saleh Gomaa was introduced in the 70th minute, and it only took him four minutes to produce an impact after playing a long ball to Azarou to put him head to head with Ismaily goalkeeper before the Moroccan striker nodded a header into the back of the net.
10 minutes later, former Al Ahly forward Karim Bambo decided to ruin the party for the Red Devils, capitalizing on a defensive error from Al Ahly defenders to dribble past El-Shennawy and slot in the open net.
Al Ahly’s still maintain their position at the top of the Egyptian Premier League with 74 points from 32 games, while Ismaily sit in the seventh place with 42 points.
