Salah was threatened not to play if he fasted during Ramadan, says ex-teammate

Chile international former and Salah’s former teammate Marcelo Díaz has relieved memories of his time with the Egyptian during at .

The 32-year-old is currently plies his trade at Argentinian giants Racing Club after joining them last summer from Mexico’s UNAM Pumas.

Before moving to South America, Diaz had stints at Celta de Vigo, Hamburger SV, and FC Basel, with the latter becoming his gateway to European football after they signed him in July 2012 from Club Universidad de Chile.

He joined the Swiss giants alongside Egypt’s and , who moved together to Switerzland from Arab Contractors in the same transfer window.

And the Chile international has revealed that the Egyptian duo faced problems fasting during Ramadan, as a former FC Basel coach threatened not to play them if they didn’t break their fast.

“My relationship with Mohamed Salah is very good because we joined Basel together in 2012,” Diaz told Encancha.

“I knew he had great footballing skills, but I never imagined that he would become the kind of player he is today.

“Once, an FC Basel coach threatened Salah that if he did not eat or drink water during Ramadan, he would not play,” he added.

Salah and Diaz played together for a one-and-a-half season at FC Basel, before the Egyptian winger joined Chelsea in the January of 2014.
