Algeria announce 23-man squad for Africa Cup of Nations

coach Djamel Belmadi has officially named his 23-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations which will take place in Egypt in June, with Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and FC Porto’s Yacine Brahimi on the top of the list.

Belmadi was announced as the Algerian national team’s new head coach back in August 2018 with a contract that runs until 2022 following the dismissal of Algerian football legend Rabah Madjer from the technical guide of the team.

Algeria were picked alongside African giants Senegal, as well as East African nations Kenya and Tanzania in Group C of the tournament which will commence on the 21st of June.

The Desert Warriors’ squad witnessed some surprises, as Faouzi Ghoulam, Nabi Bentaleb and Ishak Belfodil were all overlooked by Belmadi.

Algeria full squad:

Goalkeepers: Azzedine Doukha (Al Raed), Rais M’Bolhi (El Etifaq), Alexandre Oukidja (Metz).

Defenders: Ramy Bensebaini, Mehdi Zeffane (Rennes), Youcef Atal (Nice), Djamel Benlamri (Al Shabab), Mohamed Fares (SPAL), Rafik Halliche (Moreirense), Aissa Mandi (Real Betis), Mehdi Tahrat (Lens).

Midfielders: Mehdi Abeid (Dijon), Ismail Bennacer (Empoli), Hicham Boudaoui (Paradou), Sofiane Feghouli (Galatasaray), Adlene Guedioura (Nottingham Forest).

Forwards: Youcef Belaili (Esperance), Yacine Brahimi (Porto), Baghdad Bounedjah (Al Sadd), Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), Adam Ounas (Napoli), Islam Slimani (Fenerbahce).

UPDATE: Haris Belkebla has been axed from camp as Belmadi as a disciplinary decision.
