Javier Aguirre

national team manager Javier Aguirre talked about their group in the upcoming and their preparations for the tournament.

Aguirre took charge of the Egyptian national team in August 2018 and led them to four wins in his first six games.

Now, ahead of the AFCON, the 60-year-old has talked about his side’s preparations and their chances during the tournament.

“I’m very happy that the EFA respected my demands and didn’t postpone the national team’s camp instead postponed some Egyptian League games to after the AFCON,” Aguirre told the EFA website.

“The fact that we’re starting the camp with 23 players shows how important the preparations are.

“Our goal is to win the AFCON. The fact that all players are ready physically and mentally gives the coaching staff a lot of freedom in their preparations,” he added.

Egypt were drawn in a significantly balanced group alongside Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Uganda.

“The teams in the group are very similar. They are very organized and rely on counter attacks as they have a lot of fast players. We have to be fully focused to make the most out of the chances we get.

“I chose on purpose players that can adapt to any situations, meaning that they can be organized defensively and can easily switch to attack.

“There are five countries, including Egypt, that are very strong. We have other advantages such as the fact that we’re playing at home,” he added.

The Pharaohs will face Tanzania and Guinea on June 13 and 16 respectively in the Borg El Arab stadium, in preparation for the highly awaited tournament.
