Egypt’s Olympic team suffer 2-0 defeat against Uzbekistan

have suffered a 2-0 defeat to  in their first friendly of the June international break.

Three games were scheduled for the Young Pharaohs as part of their preparations ahead of the U-23 African Cup of Nations, which will kick-off next November in Egypt.

In case they managed to finish in the top three places, they will qualify for the 2020 Olympics, which will take place by the end of July 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.

Shawky Gharib’s men didn’t get off to a good start as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Uzbekistan at the latter’s ground.

The starting line-up saw Omar Salah start between the sticks, with Mahmoud El-Gazzar, Ahmed Ramadan Beckham, Osama Galal, and Mohamed Abdel-Salam play in defence.

Al Ahly’s Nasser Maher captained the side, which saw Akram Tawfik and Mohamed Sadek partner each other in midfield, while Ammar Hamdi, Emam Ashour, and Mostafa Mohamed complete a three-man attacking trio.

Goals from Bobur Abdukholikov and Dilshod Saitov in the 30th and 90th minutes secured the victory for the hosts, with both teams set to face each other once again next Tuesday.

Talea El-Gaish forward Mostafa Mohamed and Ittihad of Alexandria winger Ammar Hamdi had two big chances to score for the Pharaohs, but they couldn’t find the target.

Aside from Tuesday’s clash against Uzbekistan, the Egyptian U-23 national team will travel to Palestine to face the Lions of Canaan on June 16.
