Al Ahly threaten to not play any league matches before facing Zamalek first

Al Ahly have released a statement in response to the Egyptian Football Association’s () decision to postpone the Cairo derby against Zamalek.

The Red Devils were set to play Zamalek in the ’s fourth round at Borg El-Arab stadium on Saturday.

However, the game was postponed by the EFA for an undisclosed date, per the request of the country’s security officials.

The EFA then rescheduled Zamalek’s fifth-round game against Arab Contractors, bringing forward the encounter to be played on Saturday, in place of the postponed Cairo derby.

The decision to postpone the game angered Al Ahly officials as they refused to reschedule the game, threatening to not play any league matches before they host Zamalek first.

“Security officials contributed to Egypt hosting the biggest sports events including the 2019 AFCON in the summer as thousands of fans attended,” Al Ahly’s statement read.

“This is why many didn’t accept the EFA’s decision to postpone the Cairo derby for security reasons, especially that we didn’t mind playing the game at Borg El-Arab stadium with no fans attending.

“Al Ahly respects the vision of security officials regarding the Cairo derby, but we will not allow others to take advantage of this rescheduling.

“Therefore, Al Ahly will not play any game in the Premier League before they play the postponed game against Zamalek first.

“And the new date for the game should fit both teams’ schedules as they compete in domestic and African tournaments.”
