Egypt slip to draw with Kenya in AFCON qualifiers
Egypt began their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a disappointing draw at home against Kenya with Kahraba and Olunga scoring the goals.
Egypt XI: El-Shennawy; Fathi, Hegazi, Alaa, Abdallah Gomaa; Tarek Hamed, Amr El-Sulaya; El-Shahat, Afsha, Trezeguet; Kahraba.
Kenya XI: Matasi; Olwande, Okumu, Onyango, Ouma; Wanyama, Johanna; Juma, Omollo, Timbe, Olunga.
In the early stages of the game it was Egypt who created the better chances, falling primarily to Hegazi and Kahraba. On the flip side, Kenya created a good chance of their own when Omondi weaved through the Egypt defence to force a save out of El Shennawi.
Eventually Kahraba gave Egypt the lead after he latched onto a misplaced backlash and scored in an open goal just before half time.
In an attempt to shut up shop, El Badry brought on defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny however this backfired when the former Arsenal man produced a poor backpass of his own which Olunga picked up and scored in somewhat similar fashion to Kahraba.
From here, barring a late flurry of misses from the Pharaohs they were unable to create enough to win the game as it finished 1-1.
As it was the first game of qualifying, there is still plenty of time to make amends for the result from Egypt’s point of view.
Egypt will travel south east for the next qualifier away at Comoros which takes place on Monday 18th of November at 3PM Egyptian time.
