All you need to know about the upcoming FIBA Africa Women Clubs Cup
Following the success of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations we shift to another African Cup, this time in Basketball, as for the first time in history Egypt is welcoming the FIBA Africa Women Clubs Champions Cup in Cairo International Indoors Stadium from the 5th of December to the 16th, after Madagascar had formally withdrawn from hosting the tournament.
Egypt is represented in the competition by both Al Ahly as 2019 Egyptian League champions and Alexandria Sporting Club as 2019 Egyptian Cup winners. This is the first time in a little over a decade that an Egyptian Womens’ Club qualifies to the competition. The last participation was Alexandria SC when they finished in 9th spot in Benin.
This tournament is the considered as the champions league of basketball. It’s the highest caliber and most prestigious competition for womens’ clubs on the continent, organized by FIBA Africa and its participants are mainly the club champions in Africa.
Over the years, Angola has been the dominant country in the competition with Interclube winning gold a record five times followed by Primeiro De Agosto at three. In 2018, Mozambique giants Ferroviario de Maputo won the prized trophy on home soil.
Mohamed Abdulmotleb, Federation vice-president and former Ittihad and Egypt national team player is the chairman of the organising committee.
