Basketball: FIBA U-17 World Cups postponed
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have officially postponed the U-17 men’s and women’s World Cups which were set to take place this summer.
The Pharaohs were drawn in Group A alongside Canada, Australia and Italy.
They were the second African team to qualify for the tournament after Mali who were drawn with Russia, defending champions USA and the winner in the qualifying match between New Zealand and Japan.
In the previous edition, Egypt managed to qualify for the quarter-finals before eventually losing to Croatia 68-55.
Meanwhile, the women’s national team also secured a spot in the finals for the first time since the 2014 World Cup, where they lost to Hungary in the Round of 16.
They were drawn in Group A with Italy, Canada and South Korea. The tournament was set to take place at the same time as the men’s, in Cluj, Romania.
However, due to the coronavirus outbreak FIBA have decided to postpone both competitions until further notice, but they’re expected to push them until the beginning of 2021.
