OFFICIAL: Al Ahly release Sherif Ekramy before end of season
Al Ahly have released goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy before the end of the season, the Reds have announced on Sunday.
The 37-year-old had announced earlier this season he will leave Al Ahly at the end of the current season, ending a 10-year spell at the club.
Having long been the number one goalkeeper at Egypt’s most successful club, it is clear that Ekramy has become dissatisfied with falling in the pecking order.
It has been reported that he is close on moving to Al Ahly’s rivals Pyramids FC, joining teammate Ahmed Fathi, who will also leave on a free signing.
Despite having 15 games left remaining in the current Egyptian Premier League season, and more games in the CAF Champions League and the Egypt FA Cup, Al Ahly have decided to let go of Ekramy sooner than later.
“The technical staff at Al Ahly, after discussing with Sayed Abdel-Hafiz and Rene Weiler, have decided to continue the season with the players that participate in the training sessions and games, therefore Sayed Abdel-Hafiz has informed Ekramy that his role at the club has came to an end today,” a statement by Al Ahly read.
The decision comes just a day after Ekramy’s controversial tweets regarding Ramadan Sobhi’s decision of leaving Al Ahly and joining Pyramids FC.
Ekramy was accused alongside his father, Sobhi’s father-in-law, that they had a big impact on Sobhi’s decision to depart Al Ahly, which angered the Reds’ fans, as the two Ekramys are considered as club legends.
Sherif has been at Al Ahly in his current spell since 2010, having previously broken through as a senior player there in 2003 before moving to Feyenoord for a few years.
He has won abundance of trophies with Al Ahly, including seven league titles, two CAF Champions League, one CAF Confederation Cup, five Egypt Super Cups, two CAF Super Cups, and one Egypt Cup.
