Weiler not fazed by Champions League semis despite Zamalek loss
Al Ahly were handed their first league defeat of the season when they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek in the Cairo Derby.
The Reds had the upper hand for a large portion of the 90 minutes but were unable to convert any if their chances and Zamalek ended up taking the lead early on.
Being 1-0 down at a half-time, Al Ahly tried to find other ways to beat their opponent but their attempts misfired.
“We’re disappointed with the result but that’s football, we now have to properly prepare for our next games,” Weiler said during the post match press conference.
“When you’re down in the first-half you have to find solutions, which we did by changing our style of play. However, we were unsuccessful.
“I substituted Juior Ajayi because he didn’t perform well in the first-half.
“I’m not worried about the CAF Champions League semis,” he added.
Weiler then addressed some of the criticism his players have endured and assured that it won’t affect them.
“We can’t replace every player that’s unlucky or makes a mistake, it’s part of football and we have to give players more chances.
“I studied journalism and I don’t think that critics can affect the performance of players,” he concluded.
Al Ahly’ still top the Egyptian Premier League table with 56 points and next game will be against El-Gouna on August 26th.
They will also have to prepare for Wydad Casablanca, whom they’ll face on September 25th and October 2nd in the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
