Former Al Ahly goalkeeper turned pundit, Ahmed Shobeir, revealed that Momen Zakaria might make a surprise return to the squad for the Club World Cup.
Momen Zakaria was diagnosed with the rare neurological disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), in 2019 and hasn’t made any official appearance since 2018.
He has since become a prominent figure with the Red Devils as they tend to include him in all of their celebratory events to make him still feel like part of the squad.
However, it appears that he might make his return to the pitch for the Club World set to take part in Qatar on February 1st according to Shobeir.
“Al Ahly will surprise everyone, if Zakaria’s condition improves he will accompany the team’s delegation to the Club World Cup,” Shobier said on ON Sport FM.
“Al Ahly will travel to participate in the Club World Cup with a private plane and a list of 23 players, in addition to Mahmoud El-Khatib as head of the mission.
“Al Ahly is forced to exclude a number of important players from the team and there are some players who are still injured such as Junior Ajayi, who hasn’t recovered yet,” he concluded.
Al Ahly are yet to discover their fate on January 19th when the final draw takes place in Zurich, Switzerland at 16:00 CET.
Zakaria is a product of Al Ahly youth system and made over than 140 appearances for them, scoring 40 goals while winning many trophies, including four league titles.
He also had stints at Entag El-Harby, Al Masry, ENPPI, Zamalek, and Saudi side Al Ahli and Ohod.
On the international level, Momen has 12 caps to his name, with his last one coming against Greece in a friendly back in March 2018.
