OFFICIAL: Kashima Antlers sack ex-Al Ahly manager René Weiler

Japanese side Kashima Antlers have sacked former Al boss René Weiler from his position as club manager after just seven months in charge.

Weiler, 48, is known to Egyptian fans after his remarkable spell with Al Ahly between August 2019 and October 2020, which saw him lead the club in 44 games.

The Swiss managed to lead Al Ahly to the 2019/20 League title as well as the Super Cup over arch-rivals Zamalek.

The team had also advanced to the semi-finals of the 2019/20 CAF League as well as the quarter-finals of the Egypt, both tournaments which Al Ahly managed to win after his departure.

Despite his success in Cairo, Weiler had to depart Egypt citing personal reasons emerging from the COVID-19 outbreak, before going to take over Japanese side Kashima Antlers.

Weiler went to lead Antlers in 30 games, winning 16 while drawing eight and losing six, before the club decided to cut ties with him.

The decision came after the team managed to win just once in their last seven league games and suffered back-to-back defeats against Yokohama F. M. and Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

As a result, the team currently sit fifth on the league table, eight points behind league leaders Yokohama FM, with 10 games left to play.

However, they still have a shot at winning the Emperor's Cup, having reached the quarter-finals of the competition where they will face Vissel Kobe.
